In Deuteronomy, chapter 8, verse 3, the scripture says of the Israelites,

“He therefore let you be humbled (in some versions "afflicted with hunger”) and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.”  

Here is an example of God forcing the people in the desert to fast, humbling them, so that they might in their need recognize their complete dependence on Him. In a miraculous way, God provided just what they needed: manna, the bread from heaven. Not abundance, not bellies full, just what they needed, and directly from His hand. 

And today, here we are, fasters, not forcibly being humbled; rather, we are humbling ourselves, adding intensity to our prayers. This abandonment of eating as on any other day, ties us not just spiritually, but physically as well to our Creator. It should direct us to pray with greater intensity.

And isn’t it cool to see in the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus quoted this very same passage to Lucifer who tempted Christ at the end of His fast? Jesus had fasted 40 days and was hungry. The devil *very helpfully* offers a suggestion to turn stones into bread, but Christ, through the power of His fast, knew that cooperating with the devil in any way, even in a way that could sound very reasonable, would be submitting to him. So Jesus pulls out the passage from Deuteronomy to show that God alone is His sustenance.  

When Christ was at his weakest physically, he was nevertheless able to resist the temptation to engage with the devil or fall for any of his schemes.

Similarly, may God make you spiritually, supernaturally, clear-eyed today during your fast to sidestep any snares that have been set for you or anyone in your family. Remember the verse in 1 Peter 5:8 that the devil is like a roaring lion prowling around seeking whom he may devour.

He is likely looking for the weakest in your family. Circle the wagons!

2) For the protection of our police, firefighters, military and their families from harm and that the Lord bless their courageous generosity on our behalf one hundredfold.

3) For the protection of the families who fast with us, and for God’s blessings of abundance upon them and that true to His word, we will be able to witness that He prospered us in famine.

5) For priests, ministers and all who aspire to lead others to the Lord, that the Holy Spirit will reign down upon them as at Pentecost filling them to overflowing with an understanding of what the Lord wants, courage and the desire to preach what He would have them preach and protection and strength from all evil that comes against them. 

6) For the Americans jailed after January 6th who were admitted to the Capitol building by the police, and who were not found to have destroyed any property at the capitol yet who have been held captive ever since on our own soil - That God's Spirit will move quickly to bring justice back to this land by freeing them while enlightening Americans how to bring God's justice back to our nation.
