Despite our best efforts to slow down summer and prevent this fabulous time of the year from slipping into the record books once again, the reality is August is maturing quickly.
That means back to school which for some young parents may conjure up images of the classic Staples commercial. You’ll recall the ad depicts the young mother riding her shopping cart through the store aisles throwing BTS gear into her cart while singing the Christmas jingle “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
But even for many harried young parents, BTS is filled with nostalgia. For parents who are sending their children away to college, the approach of BTS invariably creates a yearning to just be together with the young rugrats.
Similarly we felt this week the sense that God just wants to be with you. No talking necessary – just to be in your company.
Like the parent who savors picking up a little one and just staring into those young wide eyes that soak up the world, that is what God wants to do with you. You don’t have to do all the talking – just be there with Him so He can give you a hug that stretches across the universe. Just be.
He turned the sun on today for you – but how much more special it is for Him if you’re there to share today.
Don’t get hung up on being too old to be a child of the Lord and don’t dig your heels in saying you’re not as cute as you were when you were a baby … because them’s may be fighting words to Him. Some saints who have glimpsed into heaven say everyone in Heaven is breathtakingly beautiful. That beauty in you that our critical eyes may not fully appreciate is what He already sees in you and it would be a balm for his heart to share one-on-one time with you.
So at some point today or tonight while you’re fasting don’t make that extra sales call. Definitely don’t turn on the TV. Don’t check your to do list - just sit on your favorite sofa or in your favorite chair and just be still with Him.
Realize this mighty Father who created everything around us cares more about you than every planet in the universe.
Tell Him some stories about some of your favorite moments through the years, your sweetest memories, and make Him a promise – Promise Him that you are going to do something you love to do this weekend … and invite Him along.
Then when you do it, be sure to remind him that you are fulfilling your promise and savoring this wonderful life He has given us. Remind Him you want Him to come along to share the whole experience with you. We like being invited to fun parties. He especially likes being invited to his children’s “funnest” moments.
Then you can tell Him you have a little gift for Him - a present wrapped beautifully with a nice bow on top and hand it to him … it’s your fast today that you do with joy. Just a little sacrifice but you do it because it makes Him happy and because like a key to a treasure chest you know it is unlocking priceless good upon our nation, our first responders and our families. You know this because His words says so.
The world has no idea how you are swaying the war for our great nation today.
People search high and low for ways to help – yet right here before us is Heaven’s battle plan for victory.
Like the troops that ran onto the beaches of Normandy, your fasting and prayers are doing what seems impossible – Our adversary whose control of the federal, state and local branches, the FDA, CDC, court system and virtually all layers of government seems invicneable, is being shelled today by our fasting. Evil is being forced to retreat. Evil strongholds are falling.
Like the pharisees who pointed to scripture and explained why Jesus was not the Messiah, most church leaders today rationalize and explain why they do not need to fast weekly and why you don’t need to fast either.
But like the apostles, you are stepping forward, leaving the theologians behind and changing history with your fast and prayer today.
Savor your time together with the master of the universe. He’s going to be so excited to see little you.

Why We Fast – Our Core Fasting Intentions
1) For the Holy Spirit to reign down upon America renewing our land as the Christian, capitalist meritocracy we were founded to be.
2) For the protection of our police, firefighters, military and their families from harm and that the Lord bless their courageous generosity on our behalf one hundredfold.
3) For the protection of the families who fast with us, and for God’s blessings of abundance upon them and that true to His word, we will be able to witness that He prospered us in famine.
