Is Bitcoin as safe as Gold?

Bitcoin has moved to center stage of finance following President Trump’s endorsement of crypto. It has also renewed the argument of financial advisors who ask ...“Do you want gold or bitcoin?“

We submit the framing of that question is deliberate, misleading and potentially devastating to investors.

Gold and bitcoin are distinctly different asset classes and there is no reason for investors to view the two in an either/or context. Gold is a physical asset that has preserved wealth for thousands of years and functions as the world’s premier currency, as manifested by Central banks even to this day.

Bitcoin may be a spectacular performer, but it is not a physical asset - it is digital and as we have seen with digital crises this month and may be constrained by government controlled Internet for access to block chain verification. BTC clearly does not have a long-term track record of preserving wealth either. 

Keep it simple ...if you believe bitcoin will soar, invest in bitcoin but only with funds that you can afford to lose as you simply would any other asset whose promoters say it is a can’t miss.

Invest in gold with the portion of your wealth where you want safety above prospective returns for your peace of mind.
